Our story
Good boards care deeply. They should not have to work it out alone.
BoardMAP exists for the people who give their time, judgement and energy to charities, nonprofits and purpose-led organisations — and want their board to make a meaningful difference.
What we observed
The boardroom has a real effect on the work beyond it.
Through work and observation with purpose-led organisations across Europe, America, Australia and the wider Pacific, we kept seeing the same truth: governance is about more than having the right documents, policies and meeting cycle in place.
The boards that help organisations thrive create space for thoughtful challenge, clear decisions and a shared focus on the people and causes they serve. They support management without stepping into management. They make the time to look forward, not just review what has happened.
The barriers are human
These challenges are common. They are not a judgement on the people in the room.
- 01
Boards can meet their compliance requirements and still struggle to add strategic value.
- 02
Operational detail can crowd out the conversations about the future, mission and impact.
- 03
Unclear boundaries between the Board, Chair and CEO can create frustration on every side.
- 04
Difficult conversations can be avoided, while groupthink or dominant voices can go unchallenged.
- 05
Capability and succession gaps can remain hidden until they become urgent.
- 06
Fundraising, advocacy and relationship-building are too often treated as management’s work alone.
- 07
Governance processes can consume valuable time without creating value for the organisation.
Why BoardMAP
A practical way to learn together and decide what to do next.
BoardMAP helps a board pause, understand how it is working and focus on the changes that could matter most. It brings together a confidential assessment, a shared view of strengths and risks, and a practical roadmap for improvement.
It is developmental and non-judgemental. It is not legal advice, and it is not an individual director rating. The purpose is to support better conversations, clearer priorities and progress the whole board can own.
